1960 Revisited - September 15
By Bobster

Thursday, September 15, 1960---The Pirates (86-54) got off to a quick start when Gino Cimoli led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and Bob Skinner followed with a 2-run HR (#15). That would be enough for Bob Friend (16-11) who held the Dodgers to 1 run on 6 hits as he pitched his 15th complete game. Ron Fairly’s triple drove in Junior Gilliam in the fourth inning for LA’s only run.

The Pirates added 1 more in the eighth when Dick Stuart’s double scored Skinner, who had singled, to make it 3-1. Skinner (.277) and Burgess (.294) each had 2 hits. The Pirate win reduced the magic number to 10 as the Cardinals, 6 games behind, won again. The Cardinals (79-59) were idle and fell 6 games behind. The Braves (80-61) beat the Cubs and were 6½ games back.

Starting lineup:
Cimoli CF
Skinner LF
Clemente RF
Stuart 1B
Burgess C
Hoak 3B
Mazeroski 2B
Schofield SS
Friend P

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Giants beat the Phillies 8-6 in 11 innings. Willie Mays had 5 hits and became the first National Leaguer to hit 3 triples in one game since Clemente did it to the Reds on September 8, 1958.
