Sunday, September 11, 1960---A doubleheader with the Cubs was rained out at Forbes Field while St.Louis defeated the Phillies to close to within 6˝ games. Although out with a broken wrist, Groat continued to lead the Pirates with a .325 average. Clemente was at .320. Dick Stuart led with 19 HRs. Don Hoak was second with 15. Clemente led in RBIs with 88 to Skinner’s 79.
Vern Law and Bob Friend had accounted for 34 wins and 31 complete games. Law was 19-7 with a 2.78 ERA and 17 complete games. Friend was 15-11 with a 2.99 ERA and 14 complete games. Friend had lost enough low-scoring games that his W-L record could easily have been as good as Law’s with a little better offensive support from his teammates. Mizell (10-4) and Haddix (10-9) accounted for another 20 wins.
The bullpen had relied on Face (9-7, 23 saves, 2.76 ERA) and Green (7-4, 3 saves, 3.44 ERA) most of the season. But now it also had Clem Labine (2-0, 3 saves, 1.47 ERA) in addition to Gibbon, Cheney, Witt and September call-ups Olivo, Umbricht, Francis and Daniels.
