1960 Revisited - September 9
By Bobster

Friday, September 9, 1960---With lefty Dick Ellsworth on the mound for the Cubs and Groat injured, Danny Murtaugh inserted Gino Cimoli in the two-hole in the batting order for the first time all season. Shortstop Dick Schofield hit eighth with Hoak and Mazeroski moving up to the 6 and 7 spots, respectively. The lineup worked, as Vinegar Bend Mizell (10-4) and Elroy Face combined to beat the Cubs 4-3. Mizell retired the first 2 batters in the second inning before Al Heist, Bob Will and Moe Thacker hit consecutive singles to give Dick Ellsworth (6-12) a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Hoak drew a one out walk and Mazeroski singled him to second. Schofield hit a grounder to short that was mishandled by Ernie Banks for an error, as Hoak scored and Mazeroski went to second base. Mizell grounded to Don Zimmer at second, who attempted a 4-6-3 double play. But firstbaseman Frank Thomas couldnít hold the ball and Mazeroski scored from second on the play to make it a 2-1 game. In the 6th inning, Hoak hit a 2-out double and Mazeroski was intentionally walked to get to Schofield. Schofield promptly tripled against Ellsworth to knock in both runners. Mizell gave up only 1 hit from the second through the ninth innings. Meanwhile, In the ninth, Mizell retired Will and Thacker to start the inning, but Nelson Mathews singled for reliever Mel Wright and Richie Ashburn doubled Matthews to third. Don Zimmerís single scored both runners to make it 4-3. Face then relieved Mizell and retired Ron Santo on one pitch for his 23rd save. The Pirates led the Cardinals by 6 games and the Braves by 7.
