1960 Revisited - August 29

Monday, August 29, 1960---The Pirates (76-49) broke their 4-game losing streak by clobbering the Dodgers 10-2 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Dodgers scored a run in the first inning against Vernon Law when Maury Wills doubled and scored on a single by Norm Larker. It remained 1-0 until the fourth when Stuart walked, Cimoli singled and Hal Smith drove a Johnny Podres (11-10) pitch over the stands for a 3-run HR (his 10th).

The Pirates had a 2-run sixth inning against reliever Larry Sherry when Hoak, Mazeroski and Skinner singled, making it 4-1, Groat was hit by a pitch, and Clemente drove in a run with a ground out to take a 5-1 lead. Tommy Davis homered off Law in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2. The Bucs added a run in the seventh when Smith singled and Hoak tripled to lead 6-2. In the top of the ninth, facing reliever Ed Palmquist, Cimoli singled, Smith walked, and Don Hoak hit a 3-run HR (his 13th) to make it 9-2. One out later, with Law at the plate, Palmquist knocked the Pirate pitcher down with an inside pitch. Law (.205) got up and proceeded to hit the next pitch out of the park for a home run. Law would hit 11 HR’s during his career. The 10-2 win made Law 5-0 against the Dodgers in 1960 and raised his record to 19-5. It was Law’s 16th complete game and lowered his ERA to 2.84. The Pirates had 16 hits including 3 apiece from Hoak (.268) and Mazeroski (.270). Clemente (.317), Cimoli (.273) and Smith (.304) each had 2 hits.

Smith’s HR was his 11th of the season, but 7 of those had come against the Dodgers. Smith also ended the season with a third of his 45 RBIs against the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals beat the Braves 3-0 to remain 5˝ games behind while pushing the Braves into 3rd place, 6˝ games back. The fourth place Dodgers were now 8 ˝ games back. In the AL, the Yankees had a 1.5 game lead on the Orioles.
