1960 Revisited - August 27

Saturday, August 27, 1960---One day after beating the Pirates (75-48) with a 2-run homer in the seventh, Stan Musial defeated the Bucs with a solo HR in the bottom of the ninth. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Tom Cheney. St.Louis added another run in the third and one more in the fifth after Fred Green had relieved Cheney.

Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, the Bucs rallied against Bob Gibson. With Bob Skinner (double) and Roberto Clemente (walk) aboard, a single by Smoky Burgess scored Skinner to make it 4-1. After a Don Hoak single, a sac fly by Mazeroski made it 4-2. Dick Stuart, batting for reliever Joe Gibbon, then tied it 4-4 with a 2-run double. Face entered the game in the seventh and shut out the Cardinals in the seventh and eighth innings. In his third inning of work, Face (9-7) retired the first 2 batters in the bottom of the ninth, but Stan Musial ended the game with his 14th HR of the season. Bill Virdon (.281) had a pair of hits for the Pirates.

The 5-4 loss gave the Pirates a 5Ĺ game lead over the Braves and a 6Ĺ game lead over the third-place Cardinals. The Braves lost to the Giants, 3-1 when Felipe Alouís 4th inning HR broke the 32 2/3rd consecutive inning scoreless streak by the Bravesí Lew Burdette (15-8). Reliever Stu Miller (4-5) made a rare start for SF and pitched a complete game, 3-hitter over the Braves.
