Sunday, August 21, 1960---The Reds (54-65) gained a split of the 4-game series in Crosley Field with an 8-4 victory. Jay Hook (10-13) defeated Bob Friend (13-10) in a game that featured 3 HRs by each team. Dick Stuart’s single in the first scored Dick Groat after Groat had walked and scored on a ground out to give the Pirates (74-45) a 1-0 lead.
But Vada Pinson connected off Friend for a 2-run homer in the third. Cliff Cook hit a solo HR in the fourth and the Reds scored 3 more in the fifth before Fred Green relieved Friend with the Reds ahead 6-1. Stuart hit his 15th HR in the sixth to make it 6-2 and Stuart (#16) and Clemente (#9) hit back-to-back shots in the eighth to make it 6-4. But Wally Post hit a 2-run PH HR in the eighth for the Reds against Joe Gibbon to close the scoring at 8-4. Stuart (.252) had 3 hits for the Pirates. The Bucs led the Braves by 6½ games.
