1960 Revisited - August 20
By Bobster

Saturday, August 20, 1960---The Pirates handed starter Tom Cheney an early 8-0 lead, but the rookie couldnít hang around long enough to get the win. The Pirates (73-44) opened the second inning against Reds starter Jim Maloney (1-4) with a walk to Stuart and singles by Clemente and Burgess to load the bases. Maloney got Hoak to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Stuart. Mazeroski was then intentionally walked to get to Cheney. And thatís when the wheels came off the cart for the Reds. Cheney singled Clemente home. Virdon singled Mazeroski home.

With the Bucs ahead 3-0 and still threatening, Joe Nuxhall relieved Maloney. Nuxhall was greeted with a single by Groat to score Cheney. And Skinner doubled to score Virdon and Groat. 6-0 Pirates. In the third, Hoak walked and Mazeroski tripled to make it 7-0. In the fourth, singles by Groat and Stuart and a sac fly by Clemente gave the Bucs an 8-0 lead before Cheney had even given the Reds their first hit. But Cheney was touched for a 3-run HR by rookie Gordy Coleman in the bottom of the fourth. Don Hoak made it 9-3 with his 11th HR leading off the fifth. And Mazeroski doubled, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch before the inning was over to make it 10-3. Cheney then gave up 3 more runs in the bottom of the fifth and was replaced by Labine with 2 outs and the Bucs ahead 10-6. Labine went 1 2/3 innings, yielding a run on 5 hits. Elroy Face pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up just 1 hit, no walks and striking out 3, as the Bucs won 10-7. Since Cheney was 1-out short of pitching the required 5 innings to qualify for the win, the official scorer had the option of awarding the win to the most effective reliever. Face (8-6) was awarded the win. Jim Maloney took the loss. Groat (.325), Skinner (.283), Stuart (.245), Clemente (.315), Hoak (.273) and Mazeroski (.266) each had 2 hits. Mazeroski was now 8 for his last 13. The Bucs had 15 hits in all, including one from pitcher Tom Cheney, who was hitting a pitcher-respectable .231. The win put the Pirates 8 games ahead of Milwaukee.
