1960 Revisited - August 19
By Bobster

August 19, 1960---Vinegar Bend Mizell had his personal 5-game winning streak ended with a 4-3 loss to the Reds and former Pirate Bob Purkey (13-7). The Pirates managed 12 hits and a walk against Purkey, who did not strike out a batter. But the Bucs scored only 3 runs while stranding 8 and hitting into 2 DPs. First inning doubles by Virdon, Nelson and Clemente gave the Pirates (72-44) a 2-0 lead. Wally Post homered for Cincinnati in the fourth to make it 2-1, and Vada Pinsonís 2-run shot in the fifth capped a 3-run rally that put the Reds ahead 4-2. Mizell was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh (Stuart, who popped up), and Clem Labine made his second relief appearance as a Pirate.

Labine pitched 2 scoreless innings, and the Pirates got to within 4-3 in the eighth when Clemente singled home Skinner, who had doubled. The Bucs threatened in the ninth when Mazeroski singled with 1 out and Gino Cimoli batted for Labine and singled Mazeroski to third. Jim Brosnan then replaced Purkey and retired Virdon on a fly ball to shallow center as Mazeroski held third. Groat then flew out to RF to end the threat and the game as the Reds hung on for a 4-3 win. Mazeroski (.264) had 3 hits. Virdon (.278) and Clemente (.313) had 2 hits apiece.

But the Braves lost to the Phillies to remain 7.5 games behind. The Cardinals trailed by 8 games. The Dodgers trailed by 9. In the AL, the Yankees lost 4-2 to Camilo Pascual (12-6) and the Senators. The Yanks had a 1.5 game lead over the White Sox and a 2 game lead over the Orioles.
