1960 Revisited - August 13
By Bobster

August 13, 1960---Roberto Clemente and Dick Groat accounted for 7 of the Pirates’ 11 hits and Clemente drove in all the runs as the Bucs (66-42) snapped the Cardinals’ win streak at 6. The Cardinals’ loss put them 4 games behind Pittsburgh. The Cardinals (63-47) scored a run in the first on a double by Julian Javier and a single by Bob Nieman.

Clemente singled home a run in the first inning for the Pirates after Groat had tripled to tie it at 1-1. Pirate starter Harvey Haddix (7-7) blanked the Cardinals the rest of the way while Clemente (.312) supplied a 2-run HR in the 3rd (#8) and singled home another run in the 4th after Virdon had walked and Groat had singled. Groat (.320) had 4 hits including a double and triple. The 4-1 win was Haddix’ 3rd complete game and lowered his ERA to 4.10. The good-hitting pitcher also went 1-for-4 and was hitting .213. 19-year old Ray Sadecki (6-6) started for St.Louis and took the loss. Sadecki gave up all 4 Pirate runs. Relievers Ron Kline and Bob Grim shut out the Bucs over the final 4 innings. 24,620 watched the game.
