1960 Revisited - August 9
By Bobster

August 9, 1960---The first-place Pirates maintained their 5-game lead, and Vinegar Bend Mizell ran his personal scoreless innings streak to 30 before finally yielding a run as the Pirates won their 6th straight. But a run was all Mizell gave up as the Pirates (64-40) beat the Cubs 7-1 at Forbes Field. The Pirates gave Mizell plenty of support with 5 runs in the 3rd inning as they kayoed Cubs starter Moe Drabowsky (0-1), recently recalled from Houston of the minor leagues.

Hoak began the 3rd with a single and scored on Mazeroskiís double. After Mizell popped out, Virdon singled to score Mazeroski. Groat walked, and both he and Mazeroski scored on a double by Skinner. That was all for Drabowsky. But Nelson greeted reliever Joe Schaffernoth with a single as Skinner scored to make it 5-0. The Cubs got their only run when Al Heist led off the 5th with a double and scored on Ron Santoís single. The Pirates added 2 more in the seventh. Hoak singled, Mazeroski tripled and Mizell singled to make it 7-2. Mizell retired the final 15 Cubs in order to raise his Pirate record to 8-2. It was Mizellís 10th consecutive career win against the Cubs. Drabowsky (0-1) took the loss. Mizell gave up only 5 hits and was aided by 3 double plays and 2 outstanding catches in CF by Bill Virdon. Virdon (.275), Hoak (.265) and Mazeroski (.253) each had a pair of hits. Mazeroski had a double and a triple. Mizell (.143) added an RBI single to his own cause. This was Mizellís 5th complete game. The Pirates now featured an impressive threesome in their starting rotation of Law (15-5, 2.84 ERA), Mizell (8-2, 2.90) and Friend (12-8, 2.96).
