1960 Revisited - August 3
By Bobster

August 3, 1960---The Pirates (58-40) dropped a rain-shortened 3-1 decision to the fourth-place Dodgers (53-43) at Forbes Field. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Bob Friend and added 2 more in the 3rd on a Wally Moon HR. Gino Cimoli singled home Dick Groat in the 6th after Groat had singled and taken second on a walk to Clemente to make it a 3-1 game. The Pirates managed only 5 hits against Johnny Podres (9-8), with Clemente (.315) getting 2 of them. After Gene Baker (.174) batted for Friend in the 7th,

Elroy Face took the mound and set down the Dodgers in order in the top of the 8th. But play was halted due to rain before the Pirates could bat in the bottom of the 8th. After a 55-minute rain delay, the game was called. Since the Pirates hadnít batted in their half of the inning, the game reverted back to the last complete inning. The game was therefore recognized as a 7-inning game, and Face did not get credit for his appearance. Instead, Friend (11-8) got credit for his 9th complete game. The Dodgers continued their mastery of Friend, who had not beaten them since the 1958 season. In St.Louis, the Cardinals won their 6th straight, defeating the Braves 13-8. The Pirates maintained their 3 game lead over Milwaukee. But the Cardinals had moved to within 3.5 games of the Bucs. The Dodgers were 4 games behind.

Meanwhile in the American League, the Cleveland Indians traded manager Joe Gordon to Detroit for Tigers manager Jimmie Dykes. After being traded to Cleveland to manage the Indians, Dykes complained that his former boss in Detroit, Tigers president Bill DeWitt, had interfered too much with the managing of the Tigers. Joe Gordon, the manager who DeWitt acquired in the peculiar trade, resigned as the Tigers manager at the end of the season. He said DeWitt interfered too much.
