July 22, 1960---Vinegar Bend Mizell raised his Pirate record to 5-2 with a victory over the SF Giants. Mizell gave up a run in the 1st inning when Willie Mays hit his 19th HR. The Giants also had at least 1 hit in each of the first 7 innings and left the bases loaded in the 3rd. Mizell went the distance, giving up 1 run, 9 hits and 2 BBs with 2 Ks. The Bucs turned 3 DPs behind Mizell. The Giants led 1-0 until the 5th inning when Cimoli started a 3-run rally with a lead-off single.
Smith singled Cimoli to second and Hoak forced Smith. Mazeroski singled Cimoli home for the tie run. Mizell sacrificed to advance Hoak and Mazeroski, and Bob Skinnerís ensuing 2-run single gave Pittsburgh a 3-1 lead. The Bucs added a final run in the 6th off loser Mike McCormick (9-6) when Groat singled, moved to third on walks to Clemente and Cimoli, and scored on Smithís sac fly to cement the 4-1 win. Groat (.324) had 2 of the Piratesí 6 hits. Meanwhile, the Braves lost an 8-7 games to the Cubs to fall 2 Ĺ games behind the Pirates (53-35).
