1960 Revisited - July 21
By Bobster

July 21, 1960---Vern Law’s strong outing salvaged one game of the Dodger series on the same day the Braves’ 7-game winning streak was ended, increasing the Pirates’ hold on first place to 1½ games. Law (12-5) snapped a personal 3-game losing streak and gained his 11th complete game of the season.

The Dodgers struck first when they combined singles by Duke Snider, Maury Wills and pitcher Johnny Podres to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. But Law did not give up another hit until Snider doubled in the 9th. Meanwhile, Roberto Clemente put the Pirates ahead to stay in the 3rd inning with a 2-run single, scoring Bill Mazeroski, who singled, and Joe Christopher, who reached on an error. Then, for those who missed his two-home run game the day before, Hal Smith duplicated the feat with solo HRs in the 4th and 7th innings. Sandy Koufax pitched the final 2 innings in relief of Podres (8-7) as the Bucs prevailed 4-1. 51,193 fans were in attendance, and a total of 153,932 witnessed the 3-game series. Smith (.298) had now hit 6 of his 9 HRs in the Coliseum, the Dodgers’ home park. And the combination of 61 RBIs between platooning catchers Smith (37) and Burgess (24) topped team leader Clemente (58).
