1960 Revisited - July 10
By Bobster

July 10, 1960---The Pirates (49-30) gained a split of the 4-game series with a 6-2 win over the Phillies. The Bucs took a 1-0 lead against Robin Roberts (5-8) in the 2nd when Clemente got an infield hit, took second on a throwing error by Roberts, took third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly by Hoak. The Bucs made it 2-0 in the 3rd inning when Virdon singled and scored on a double by Skinner.

But Philadelphia came back against Harvey Haddix (6-4) with a run in the 6th and another in the 7th. Tied 2-2 in the 9th, things fell apart for Roberts when his overthrow to third base (his second throwing error of the game) on Hoak’s bunt allowed Clemente to score the go-ahead run after Clemente had doubled and Burgess had drawn an intentional walk. With Christopher running for Burgess and one out, Nelson batted for Haddix and singled. That scored Christopher, and Hoak scored on an error by Phillies catcher Neeman. Nelson wound up at third base. Baker then ran for Nelson and scored on a single by Virdon. The 4-run rally made it 6-2 before reliever Dick Farrell could end the inning. Elroy Face pitched the 9th and earned his 13th save. Virdon (.266) and Clemente (.325) each had 3 hits for the Pirates. Skinner (.304) had a pair. As they headed into the All-Star break, the Pirates had a 5 game lead over Milwaukee (43-34) and an 8 game lead over third-place Los Angeles.
