Happy 67th birthday to Pirates great Bob Veale, who from 1964-1970 had double digits for wins every year, including a 67-44 record during a 4-year stretch.

A great strikeout pitcher, Veale has 6 of the 8 highest single season strikeouts per 9 inning totals in Bucs history. This includes an amazing 9.34 in 1965, finishing 2nd in the league to Sandy Koufax. Koufax set a NL record with 382 and at the time a ML record, later broken by 1 by Nolan Ryan when he was with the Angels in 1973.

Veale led the league in strikeouts in 1964. He holds the single game record for Bucs pitchers with 16 (6/1/65 vs the Phillies, 4-0 shutout) and was a 2-time all-star in 1965 and 1966. Veale moved to the bullpen in 1971. He made a brief but unmemorable appearance in the 71 WS, giving up 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning.

The next season he was sold to the Red Sox in September, finishing his Bucs career with a 116-91 record.
