A little gallows humor down the home stretch 9-30-05
by Stephen Zielinski

Itís the last weekend of the season. At least five teams have something to play for.

The Pirates are playing for the right to pick second in the 2006 Draft. The race has tightened a bit as the season has drawn to a close.

As the table demonstrates, the Pirates do not have much room to maneuver. If they are successful this weekend, they could fall out of second place. They even could tie the Seahawks if they were to sweep the Brewers. The Royals, on the other hand, firmly hold first place.

The Brewers play the Pirates this weekend. Their task is much different. They need to win one game to secure a .500 record for the season, two games to achieve a greater than .500 record. Like the Pirates, they have recorded 12 straight losing seasons. 81 or more wins would remove them from the plunge to infamy, namely, the most consecutive losing seasons in major league history. The mark is 16, and the Pirates are mounting a serious threat to that sorry record.
