Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

Greg Brown has a great HR call with “cannonball coming!” But I find it very annoying when he personalizes the call based on the player’s name. For Conner Joe, he references the Beatles “Get Back” because it says “JoJo.” So Brown says, “Look out Loretta. JoJo.” He just tries way too hard to be clever...

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

Good point about Cutch. I hadn’t thought about it, but it does seem that he’s somewhat detached from the trials and tribulations of the team and just playing for himself. This is probably going to be his last season and I guess he just wants to have a good time before he hangs them up. But at this p...

Re: Rowdy Tellez

I guess we all hoped that his signing was more than the typical dumpster dive. But that’s what the evidence pointed to. In the past two years, he batted .219 and .215. The guy just can’t hit. But he did have 35 HRs two years ago. But he only had 13 last year. When a guy hits as poorly as Tellez, it ...

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

At least Gonzales got a rest after playing 2 games. But he pinch ran so that might require another day off. I'll bet when Cherington reviews the analytics of this game, the trends, the players resting, the pitch counts, the bat speed, the launch angles, etc, he's going to be very pleased. Fans get t...

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

In response to people talking about great pitchers on other teams, I’ve often said half-jokingly, just wait 10 years and the Pirates will get him. That was the case with Chapman. He’s certainly past his prime. But that’s the only way the Pirates get players who were once outstanding.

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

Bednar gives up lead off double. He looks like a batting practice pitcher this year. Might be time to get him out of high leverage situations with his 9+ ERA.

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

Bucs tie it and Ortiz hands Cubs 2 base runners. Nice catch by Suwinski as Suzuki bails out Ortiz by swinging on 3-0 pitch.

Sadly, as Cherington noted, Tellez is hitting the ball in line with his career figures. :(

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

I guess after starting 2 games, Gonzales needed a day off. And that gives Shelton an opportunity to start Williams, who they had decided to option before Hayes was put on IL. You would think the guy they recalled to help the offense would start ahead of the guy they were optioning. Buit not the brai...

Re: Official Game Thread - 5/12 - Bucs vs Cubs

Per the PG: With Taylor and Tellez in particular, Cherington said underlying skills such as bat speed and how they’re each hitting the ball are in line with their career figures. Typical Cherington. He's not looking at productivity. He's using analytics to look at "underlying skills such as bat...
