The Lynchburg 3B has now had 11 multi-hit games in his last 15 contests and one of the games he didnt get at least 2 hits,he walked 3 times. Guy is hitting .404 on the year with 40 hits in 99 AB's. If he wasnt struggling defensively at a new position you would have to consider moving him up already, especially with the 3B situation at Altoona.

McCutchen hit his 6th homer tonight and raised his batting avg up to .296 with a 3-4 night. Walker drove in 2 runs and Luis Monuz pitched well for the win, 7 IP,1 run,4 K's.

Biggest news of the night had to be Brad Corley getting his first walk of the year....no thats not a misprint,he took a walk!

Steven Lerud had a good night, 3-3,he has 4 homers and is taking some walks, too bad he wasnt doing that last year, his first year in Lynchburg when Pirates brass were hyping him as a minor lg hidden gem

Finally, Robert Spain the 3b down at Hickory gets no love on the board so I'll mention him.For a big guy he has no power or just hasnt found it yet,but he has his avg up to .288 after a real slow start. A 6"4 lefty hitter would be a nice thing to have in the system if he actually hit for power but he has just 2 HR's in 250 minor league AB's and hes about to turn 23

"Right fielder" Eddie Prasch is also having a nice season batting 302, 802 OPS and has significantly improved his plate discipline.

Corley has cut down on his K's this year which has turned him into a singles hitting cleanup hitter.

The game I saw Corley play this year he was swinging for the fences on every pitch near the strike zone, the homers and strikeouts will eventually come and the walks will stay away

James Negrych - wasn't he the local kid?  A second baseman previously?  So he is taking up 3B now hum?  Should be an easier transition than from the out field or first base.  How much of a struggle is "struggle"?

Went to Pitt.

His best defensive position is DH.  He's got awkward movements and bad hands.  Doesn't run well, either, so I don't think the OF will work.  But if the hitting is real he'll find a role somehow.

I believe he has 8 errors already and he comes with a bad defense rep as Wilbur pointed out. The odd part is when I saw him play late last year for 3 straight games he made 2 real good defensive plays and looked good on all the easy plays. If i didnt know better I wouldve thought he was a good defensive player. Switching positions in the infield cant be much help to him but I think they figured Shelby Ford was a real good prospect and right in front of him

If Negrych continues to hit at anywhere near what he is hitting at the moment in the next 100 or so AB's I would move him up.  He can learn to play 3rd at Altoona.

I assume part of the idea was to get him ready to serve as a UT guy.  I doubt anybody would project him as a starter in the majors.

They might as well move him up.  He can play 2B or 3B.  All they have at 3B is non-prospect Melvin Dorta and who knows when Ford will ever be ready to play.

Bobby Spain was the SS for my home team (Harrisonburg Turks) in the Valley League (college wood bat summer league) in Virginia back in 2006.  He was on their roster for 2007 as well, until drafted by the Pirates.  He looked like a decent player in the Valley League with some line drive power and decent defense, but he appears to be bigger now than he was in 2006.  My guess is that he won't be much of a prospect as a third baseman.

After going 3 for 5 last night Corley has a 12 game hitting streak and is now batting 316

With an OBP of .328 and an OPS of .755, that's a putrid, malodorous, smelly tub of poo...

Negrych has now reached base safely in 28 of the 29 games he has appeared, has 17 multi-hit games, and only 4 games without a hit.
