If you did not hear, the Dodgers called up John Lindsey who had spent 16 seasons in the minors without making the majors. Great story of perseverance

He made his ML debut today in the top of the 8th inning with 1 out,2 runners on and the Dodgers trailing the Padres 4-0. Must've been an amazing moment for him to hear his name called over the loud speaker as he began his walk towards home plate. In fact Bud Black the Padres manager wanted to come out to shake his hand I guess....oh wait,he's bringing in the righty from the bullpen and Andre Ethier grabbed a helmet and bat in the dugout. Good job John Lindsey, hit the showers, you've waited 16 years and 1571 minor league games to have your major league debut consist of:

J. Lindsey hit for S. Podsednik
- L. Gregerson relieved J. Thatcher
- A. Ethier hit for J. Lindsey

But hey,he's now in the baseball encyclopedia right between Moonlight Graham's 1 inning on defense with no plays and Larry Yount getting injured during him warmup pitches for his ML debut and never making the majors again

With 20+ games left, I'm sure Torre will get him in a meaningless game. And with the Dodgers record...most of their remaining games are meaningless. Like the 4 this weekend with Houston.

The Dodgers said they are flying his family into Houston so I'm assuming they start him at least one game there, maybe more. I'm sure this just isnt how he always pictured his ML debut would go all those years in the minor leagues trying to work his way up. The ESPN announcers had the same reaction I had once Bud Black came out,"Oh no they're not gonna pinch hit for him are they!  They are! noo! C'mon!"

If his family will be there, hopefully they will give him a full game.

The team should go into the manager's office and put their jerseys on his desk and give him their spot.  Has that ever been done before?

They didnt make Lindsey wait long to get his real first game in,let him pinch hit tonight. He flew out to CF and still had a huge smile on his face when it was caught, nice moment for him. I think they will let him start a game since his family is there, why would they fly them in just to watch him possibly pinch hit

It looked like he took his removal in good humor, plus he'll have a far better story to tell his grandkids down the line.

I saw that too although I was wondering if that smile he had was just like the smile Armando Galarraga had when Jim Joyce Jim Joyce'd that call at 1b to ruin his perfect game. He was smiling but probably thinking If I had a bazooka you would be turned into a jigsaw puzzle right now

Who was the third baseman from Steubenville who was in the Pirates system a while back? He had never made it to the bigs after a lengthy Minor League career, and he had performed reasonably well in AAA for us so I remember being reasonably sure they'd give him a September call-up just to get a couple of Major League at-bats with his hometown team. I was pretty sad for the guy when that didn't happen, and I never understood why that would have been such a difficult thing for the Pirates to do.

I dont know what you mean by awhile back but there was Mike Gulan who was from Steubenville and he played 3b for Nashville in 2003 and did pretty well his one season there. He made the majors very briefly twice, once for less than 2 weeks, once as a sparingly used Sept call-up. He never got a major league hit though in 15 AB's,maybe thats what you were thinking about?

Yeah, that's exactly who I was thinking of...I didn't remember that he had been called up by other teams prior to coming to the Pirates, but still, it would have been nice if the Bucs had given him the chance to get his first Major League hit. It's not like we had more pressing issues in September of 2003, especially when you consider that Aramis Ramirez had just been traded, leaving the Pirates with Jose Hernandez at third base (God forbid he would lose at-bats to Mike Gulan).
