so says Bill Center of the SD Union-Tribune who states:

Still seeking

General Manager Kevin Towers said the Padres have had recent communications with the Cubs and
Pirates, respectively, regarding right-handed-hitting corner outfielders Matt Murton and Xavier Nady.
Murton, 26, hit .281 with eight homers and 22 RBI with the Cubs last year and batted .297 with 13 homers and 62 RBI in 144 games with the Cubs in 2006. Talks with the Cubs regarding Murton began after the Cubs outbid the Padres for Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome.

Nady, who started his career with the Padres, is a .272 career hitter with 62 homers and 226 RBI in 524 games.

“With Fukudome in Chicago, Murton might be available,” Towers said. “We've exchanged a few more e-mails with the Pirates on Nady, but I don't know if we match up very well for a trade.”

I wouldn't just give away Nady.  I do think he could be more valuable at the trading deadline.  It is a risk I am willing to take as I don't think Nady would bring a decent return right now.

I sure would listen, isn't that just logic?  But should Towers be truely interested then maybe he could come up with what we are looking for, real prospects.  Not MLB ready players.

If Towers thinks we don't match up, that means they don't value Nady as highly as we do. Meaning we won't take garbage for him.

Previously, when Nady was with the Pads, we couldn't pry him and instead settled for Bay.  Not the worst possible outcome.  So, I'd listen wouldn't you?

I really like Matt Murton.  If I were Towers, I'd pursue him over Nady.  If I were Huntington and we did happen to move Nady, I would see what it would take to get Murton.  I think he's the type of player the Bucs need to add to their offense.  Murton walks more and strikes out less than Nady.  While I'd give the power edge to Nady, Murton could still show some of the power in the majors he exhibited in the minors.  He's had less than half as many ML at-bats as Nady, longer contract control, could still improve, and the Cubs seem to undervalue him.

I don't see the Pirates going after Murton. If they do trade Nady, they would probably have Pearce platoon in RF with Doumit. One way or the other the Pirates should trade Nady at some point this season. He is represented by Boras and in most cases his clients test the free agent waters when they have the chance. Hopefully Nady will stay healthy enough to "maximixe" his trade value by the trading deadline.

Beware of Towers, the master of misinformation.
