I'm watching the Phillies game and Ryan Howard gets kicked out of the game in the 14th and they have no more position players left so Roy Oswalt has to play LF. They researched it real quick and said the above date was the last time a Phillies pitcher played another position(Bill Wilson) and believe it or not it was 3b and just happened to be against the Pirates so I looked it up. He came in bottom of the 7th down 2-1 to face Maz who walked and got pinch ran for,Dock Ellis batted in the inning(wouldnt happen nowadays) and he retired the side.
In the 8th inning now with a 3-2 lead,Wilson faces Clemente, gets a groundout.Wilson moves to 3b,Joe Hoerner, lefty comes in to face Stargell, strikes him out,Wilson comes back in and gets Sanguillen to groundout, pitcher unassisted. Ellis still in for the 9th faces Wilson who bats in the 9th! In the 9th he retires Robertson,Alley, gives up a walk and single to Davilillo and Oliver before getting the last out.
I dont know what I'm more impressed with,Wilson's performance, the crazy managerial moves that worked or the fact the Phillies were doing that while 20 games out in August. Oh wait,I know what impresses me the most, the Pirates lineup...Alley,Maz,Stargell,Clemente,Robertson,Oliver,Sanguillen,Ellis...Cash and Clines batting .319 and .320!
