Pirates said in late August they weren't pursuing Sanchez which basically left the Mets as the favorite to sign him. The reason it took this long was his price was way too high

I thought I read it was his age investigation that was the primary delay.

I never heard names but there was a bunch of players who failed PED tests,he might've been on there, that was the initial explanation for a slow beginning to the signing period. According to Dejan and reported by Tim,his price tag was ridiculous and the Pirates had no interest and stopped pursuing him in late August.

Somehow with all the spending Texas has done they found time to pick up some odor. In fact Roughned Odor. For whatever reason beyond the name I really liked the description of this kid. BA has some free stuff up on him. He signed for like 450 K not bad. I wonder if we were ever in on him.

Unless I'm forgetting someone,I think the Pirates have only signed one player since signing Dilson Herrera on August 20th,that would be Jackson Lodge,a 17 year old pitcher out of Australia they signed in late November. I guess Heredia really blew the budget because last year November was a busy time for the Bucs on the Int'l front.

The last two years actually.  They signed a group of people in November/December 2008 that included Jorge Bishop.

When did we find out about those signings, seems to me that we found out a few months later, but maybe I just did not notice until then.

Bishop was announced on December 5th, 2008:

The Mets signed Sanchez for just $40k!  He must've really fell out of favor with scouts for all the teams because it sounds like his conditioning is already being questioned and his swing was described as long and choppy. At one point he was top 10 among July 2nd players so the Mets either got a steal on him or they have a problem player on their hands.

Listening to the free Baseball America podcast from Ben Badler on the International market/signings. Some discussion about the Pirates starting around the 9:45 mark. Also Heredia talk at around the 20:00 minute mark. Here is a link (podcast is the one called International Interest).

Nothing to report but just wanted to share an article on the Rockies International program I thought was worth reading. They have an annual budget of two million dollars and are building an academy this year in the Dominican Republic.
