Not Mateo or Salcedo but it beats reading about injuries. The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with 17-year-old Dominican outfielder Willy Garcia on a $280,000 bonus, according to several sources. Playing for the Patriotas del Centro of the Dominican Prospect League, Garcia hit .217 in 23 at bats. Garcia's projectable frame (6-foot-3, 177 pounds) makes him an intriguing prospect. Garcia is the 14th prospect to sign from the DPL, according to the league. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4924472&name=arangure_jorge_jr

Personally, I think they'd have more success signing a bunch of guys like this rather than throw a bunch at one guy whose probability of being a good major leaguer isn't that high.

From the DPL website:
Willy Garcia has become the latest D.P.L. player to go Pro, The Pirates signed Garcia to a $280,000 dollar contract this past week. Playing with Los Patriotas del Centro for Christian "El Niche" Batista for 3 months and coming off a great All-Star game showcase Garcia has shown much improvement in all tools. His Arm, Running ability, and Power potential made him an interesting asset to many organizations. Garcia has a long way to go before he is considered a true 5 tool player but he has enough to be a solid everyday guy in MLB. His projectable frame and tools handed him a well deserved opportunity to develop his skills as a professional ball player. We congratulate Willy Garcia and wish him the best in his quest to be a MLB player.

But as for being a safe pick, I don't think there is such a thing. When someone gets to the big leagues and performs, then I'll say he's a safe pick. Until that happens, there's no such thing. -Bruce Seid- Brewers Director of Scouting

$280,000 is a decent bonus, has anyone in the past year gotten more than that? I know Cayonez made 400k two years ago, but no one from this year got near that until this, right?

That's the most they've spent on the int'l front going back to Cayonez, Barrios, et al. Anybody with "power potential" is OK by me.

I don't think I've seen bonus numbers for many of the signings this year. I know Arangure reported Ramses Pena at $150,000, but that's about it. I'd assume they've been in that range and lower until this one.

I'd love to see us get Mateo after messing up the Sano thing...that doesn't seem too promising though

Cayonez got $400 K. Carvajal got $350 K. Barrios got $250 K, and was one of the top 25 for the 2008 international signing period.
I know Cayonez is the highest, and I saw that Carvajal was 2nd highest. I think this is the third highest bonus, at least for what has been reported.

On a similar subject, any guesses on where these guys will play this year. Are Bishop, Cayonez, Pino, or Sosa ready to move up to the GCL?

7 guys got bonuses of 100k or more last year with the highest being 150k so it is the highest since 2008

Are you guys talking about what you KNOW, or just assuming from what's been reported? As far as I know, we don't know what the bonus figures are for anyone except Garcia and Pena, and the Pirates apparently spent $2 million or a little more in Latin America last year. It's possible there is another bigger bonus that just hasn't been reported yet, right?

Thanks, omar--is this from Arangure, or have you heard this somewhere else? I talked to Dejan about this a couple weeks ago and he didn't have a lot of specifics.

Somewhere else in the organization. Its possible the numbers werent released when you asked Dejan because I only recently found them out, about a week or so ago.
On to the new guy, that is a pretty good bonus and just based on comparing his bonus with the ones from last year. They were pretty high on a few of those guys I mentioned so for them to almost double any of those bonuses they must've really liked what they saw. I like the fact they liked his arm, running and power potential because arm/running means he has a good chance for strong defense/range and power/speed means he could hit for average as well. As many kids as they could get like him the better.

That's why I specified "based on what has been reported". I know it's been said that Cayonez was the top signing, but there's a chance that others have topped $280 K and just not been announced.
