Back in 2002 the Bucs had a future star(in my mind) in Tony Alvarez who impressed the guys over at Baseball America enough that they rated him 6th overall. Alvarez was a potential 5 tool outfielder signed as an Int'l amateur free agent,he stole bases well,had some power,played CF,hit for average,didnt take many walks though. Recently I found that issue of BA and read all of the scouting reports and it scared me to read the one for Alvarez because cut to 8 years later and they basically copied and pasted that same report for Starling Marte right down to the fact theyre both 6"1 righties who made big jumps that year and BA rated them 6th overall. I had high hopes for Alvarez just like I do for Marte but its kind of scary to see their reports are almost mirror images of each other and to know that Alvarez's career amounted to just 64 September AB's over 2 seasons.

Honestly, what happened to Tony is weird, he still put up good numbers in the minors and in his first stint with the Pirates. Why was he never given a real chance?

I don't know either, but I seem to remember that he was suspended for a very long time for unspecified "serious off field violations" or something like that . . .
At least that's what I recall. My apologies to Tony if I'm wrong.

Checking his baseball-reference page, he was with the Pirates in 2004, putting up solid numbers at AAA but not much during a short callup. The following year he played in a grand total of five games with the White Sox AAA club. He had some off the field issues. I watched him play a bunch in the minors. He showed good power at Hickory. He was a solid offensive player, but seemed slow in the outfield. Marte is much faster, and 10x the defensive player. |

Honestly, that's a pretty tough evaluation of someone who has played exactly one season stateside, and done remarkably well. His plate discipline is cause for concern, but I have seen his tools almost universally lauded by every other evaluation that I've read. I'm surprised to read something that his ceiling isn't high. |

Anybody who thinks Marte has "OK spd" hasn't seen him play. I've seen Marte play one night in Charleston. The kid can fly from line to line. imo only Cutch is faster. |

The Pirates let him go as a 6 year minor league free agent following the 2004 season,he signed with the White Sox and was cut very early in spring training,maybe a week into the spring games schedule. He got hurt 5 games into the year and missed the rest of the season. He played real well in the Venezuela Winter League and was signed by the Orioles but again missed most of the season,he was put on the Inactive list late in the year and released right before the AAA season ended. He played for the Venezuela national team,then signed to play in Taiwan. He hit .305 with 10 homers this past winter league season playing alongside Gorkys Hernandez

I remember Alvarez, paired with J.J. Davis as being projected as our future OF for years to come. That didn't go very well.

I was a big fan of Tony and of JJ back then. We didn't have much in the minors to root for. JJ struggled a lot in the minors, but IIRC Tony always did pretty well.

Isn't Tony married to a former Ms. Venezeula?
I was surprised that he wasn't that fast based on his stolen base numbers in low minors.
But it just seems like some players are very aggressive base runners at that level and rack up a lot of steals and don't maintain that ability as they advance.
