I actually still believe everything I wrote 3 years ago.  In fact, I'd go as far to say that it was a clear win for the Penguins.

Obviously, the Penguins didn't win the Cup that year, but it would be foolish to suggest that the Penguins would have reached the Finals without Hossa.  The experience alone was worth it.  Who knows if we would have won the Cup the next year without getting there the year before?

Talking about Big Fish, I would make the Hossa trade again in a minute.  The guy was a key in the Pens getting to the Finals. They saw a chance to go for it now and a scoring winger was what the needed and still need today. Esposito is a center and the Pens had plenty of depth there and could afford to trade him.  He was not a guarantee to become a World Class center anyway.

Unfortunately I don't think the Pens prospects are as great in the future as what we fans hope.  Do they need to go and find another rental player like Hossa again this year?  With Geno out one would think so.  But what about Sid?  Just saw this article and I wonder if he will be back this season.  http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/41494845/ns/sports-nhl/

If he does comeback as a shadow of his former self and I for one believe that is a strong possibility, where does that leave the Pens future as an NHL powerhouse.  Guys like Sid only come around once in a generation.  The Pens have been to have two such player in a row in Lemieux and Crosby.  I wonder how the fans will react if Sid can't play or only as a shadow or his former self and the Geno is more like what we saw this season rather than in the past?  If something like this happens it opens the door for the Buccos to woo fans with the likes of Cutch, Pedro, Walker, Tabita and a couple young pitchers.  I hope so!

Daultan Leveille is the guy Atlanta took in with our pick. He is 10th in Atlanta system. I really dont see how that guy not being in our systems really hurts. Overall it was  a steal for the Pens.

funny to look back at this stuff..

I consider the trade a wash. The Pens made a championship run, but traded bargaining chips to Atlanta for a player who left after the season. Since the Pens did not win the Cup that year, the trade failed to achieve the objective it was meant to serve.

The funny thing is, the only NHL guy still with either team is Pascal Dupuis. Christensen was traded to the Ducks for next to nothing and then claimed off waivers by the Rangers. Armstrong played for two years in Atlanta and then left via FA. Esposito is still with the Thrashers' minor league affiliate, but he's looking more and more like a bust. He spent last year in major juniors.

I would actually call this a win for the Penguins.  They made the finals because of Hossa, who was huge in the playoffs.  Dupuis was a big part of the Cup team.

Christiansen and Armstrong are interchangeable players.  No loss.  As you said, Esposito is a huge bust.  He was considered the top prospect for the 2007 draft.  He was hurt last year actually, and he has been terrible this year.

To give up a late first round pick for two Cup runs, one of which you won?  I think 30 GMs would take that.

I agree.  I did not comment back then, but we did not give up much for a player that was considered to be one of the best in the league.  Would people take those players for Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy?

If Sid is not back, I would pass on trading for anyone.  They will make the playoffs without him, but they will not go far.  And you cannot really replace him.

The problem is that Sid will not be back before the trade deadline, but could be before the end of the season.

I would not trade any prospects if that is the case.  They could do a trade like the Guerin trade, and make the draft pick based on how far the team goes.  Although Shero already traded a 3rd round draft pick for Dan Hamhuis.

If Sid wont be back for the playoffs then they will put him and Malkin on LTIR on go on a shopping spree. Playoff revenue generates so much money in hockey. Plus in the the playoffs, Defense and Goal tending wins championships. We are really set up there.

Once Malkin goes on LTIR they will have allot of flexibility to bring guys in. Crosby will be back though...

They can't go on a shopping spree after the trade deadline though, and they won't know if Sid will be ready for the playoffs before then.

I'm really undecided myself. I can understand both sides

I am pretty sure Malkin is already on the long term IR.  There is zero chance that he would be able to play in 24 days, which is the requirement.

I do not see the Salary Cap preventing them from acquiring anyone at this point.
