The Pirates are one of three teams he is considering signing with.  The others are Reds and Mariners

If the bucs are serious about Hairston, they must be confident that they can move Wilson.  I'd like this move.

If you click on the link to the actual article from the Cincinnati Enquirer that's referenced, Jay Bruce is actually quoted as saying that Hairston is considering the Reds, Mariners, and Philadelphia, not the Pirates.

The Pirates already have their back up infielder, Hairston isn't needed.  If Wilson is traded, Bixler or Cruz should battle it out to start the season at SS if a SS is not returned in the deal.

If the Pirates are lookign at Hairston to play the outfield, I think they can find someone with a little more power to come off the bench over Hairston.

Looks like Hairston IS of interest to the Bucs. I like his versatility and speed.

The more I look into Hairston the more I'm starting to like the idea.  I doubt he'll keep up that .380 OBP but if Neal and the ownership can pull it off you wind up with a nice two headed bench monster of Vazquez (vs righties) and Hairston (vs lefties) to go along with Doumit's backup catcher, Pearce, and hopefully Morgan (if his baserunning skills improve).  Sadly it might take a multiyear to get him but I'd rather have Hairston than Bixler and Cruz.  Those two need more seasoning at Indy.

Hairston also played a significant number of games in the OF, so he would be a great pickup for flexibility purpsoses.  He may even make Nyjer Morgan irrelevant (crossing fingers).

2008 positions for Hairston:
SS - 34
LF - 24
CF - 17
RF - 12
2B - 7
3B - 1

With all that said, last year was a total outlier from his previous season statistics.  He would still be a great bench player.
