A good GM will makes mistakes, recognize them, and move on. This was the right thing to do, especially with the selection of Veal, and improvement of Meeks.

This also opens a roster spot, if the Bucs pursue another free agent. Good move on all accounts.

Or somebody who was non-tendered today.  There are a number of interesting players.

To name a few

Daniel Cabrera
Jonny Gomes
Takashi Saito
Yhency Brozoban
Clay Hensley
Mat Belisle (who's been lights out against us)

I'd add Tim Redding, and Chris Capuano on a minor league incentive laden contract for 2 years-1 recovery year and 1 bounce back year.

NH is going to sign whoever maxes out the formula:

MPH (over 90) -Years (over/under 27) + Inches (over 6'3") + BB/9 (over 4.0)

Interesting comments:

"It was mostly about a roster spot," Huntington said. "We'd like to have him compete for a job in our bullpen, but we weren't willing to gamble upwards of a half-million dollars that he was going to make our team."

The 40-man roster is at 39, and the Pirates are known to be interested in some of the players expected to be non-tendered around the majors.

Sounds like they expect to use the spot, but if they released Bautista later, after they signed somebody, they'd be on the hook for some money, so they ditched him now.

I guess Neal learned his lesson after BYK's implosion.

Daniel Cabrera would be his man, matching all of the above criteria.

I don't think signing Bautista last year was a mistake by any means.

We needed a right hander out of the bullpen, Bautista had been pitching pretty well for Detroit, has power stuff, and Neal took a half-season flyer on him.  It was a good move, in my opinion.  Bring a guy in who potentially has high upside if he could harness his stuff, but it just didn't work out.

One thing to always consider......As a vasity softball coach (which by no means makes me a Pirate's special insider lol) I can tell you that attitude and coachability goes a long way in determining playing time.  We, as outsiders, aren't ever sure of a player's ability to be coached and desire to change mechanics, style, attitude etc.  I wonder how much of this factors into some decisions.  Some, because if you're good enough (a.k.a. Manny) then clubs will overlook obvious character quirks.

The mistake would have been if he kept him on the 40 man roster now. Last year, Rick Rueschel would have been resigned, if he could have made it out to the mound without help. Hopefully, this year will be better, and most of the staff won't be shell shocked again.

Unfortunately, Rick Rueschel would have been an improvement over alot of the guy the Pirates ran out to the mound last year.  Paul Rueschel might have been an improvement.  Almost made you miss Steve Cooke and Paul Wagner.
