IF Huntington has his way (or maybe Nutting's mandate), the Pirates payroll may be less than what the Yankees will pay Sabathia and Burnett next year.

In a larger scale, they will have 4 players that combined will make approximately twice the Pirates payroll for 09'.

God i love this game (and the Pirates), but this is just wrong.

I refer to DK on this though
"Look, people, you were the ones who signed up to support this franchise. Grab a strait jacket and cope."
possibly one of the best quotes applied to Pirates fans - ever

America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.

It would be so much easier to be a Yankee or Red Sox fan......but look at the Red Sox....the Pirates have actually won more WS than the Sox since 1918.....except the Sox have had a good run over the past five years.  If you are a Yankee fan, it must be very, very frustrating to have not won since, when, 2000?  For Yankee fans, 8 or 9 years is an eternity!!!!  But, I'll grant you, every year they think they have a chance, and they do.  The Pirates haven't had a chance since, gulp (tears), 1992....and will we ever have another chance with this cheap owner? >Cheesy

People are always talking about "the sunk cost" of a useless veteran's contract, and how you have to ignore it and dump the guy because you can either pay him off and develop a young player or pay him to stay and watch your roster rot away.

Well, folks, the last 16 years are our sunk cost. Does the future look better than it did a week ago? Six months ago? Fifteen months ago? That's about as far back as we can take it.

Right now,  no, things don't appear brighter.  I think once we get into the season of '09, and see how some of the young players do (Tabata, Alvarez, Hansen, McCutcheon) then we'll know if this team has a chance to turn the corner.

Things do look brighter because the Pirates have more talent in their organization now than they did in the last 15 years.  And it only took Bob Nutting (New Majority Owner), Frank Coonelly (New President) and Neal Huntington (New General Manager) a little over a year.

I still find it hard to believe that some fans still don't see the changes and the improvement throughout the organization?

Dog, We are all so jaded and tired that it's hard to sometimes see the glow of the sunshine.  And, we know what's coming in 2009....blah!!  We Bucco fans don't want to wait another two or three years.....but I guess we have to.

2009 is a big year for the organization as a whole, not just the Pirates.  The Pirates will still take the field and do their best.  Some will struggle, some will make strides, and some will probably stay the same.  Those are called growing pains.

As a fan, you will have to realize that and look what is happening in Indy and Altoona.  I know it is hard, but you have to be happy with the new people in charge.  The Pirates are truly rebuilding.  The last time they were rebuilt was in the late 80's.  Hopefully, the results will be even better this time around.

I just don't see a reason in being negative all the time.  We can't change the past and the new people in charge weren't around or in their current position the last 16 years.  Things have changed and have changed for the better.

Nice job, I agree 100%.  Not saying it's going to work, but nobody can argue the Pirates have done this before.  The reality is that this is what needed to be done all the while.  Unfortunately, we had GM's (among others) who turned a blind eye so they could save their jobs for another year.

Very well said.  Just remember Pirates fans it could always be worse....you could be a Padres fan.
2009 is a HUGE year for the Pirates farm system.  If a super-majority of these guys develop as we hope, plus we add 1-2 prospects mid-season in trade, and have another high-upside draft....we will be looking at a Top 10 farm system going into 2010.

If that's the case, I truly believe that we will become players in FA (not the CC's or Tex's) but maybe for the 2nd tier guys to bolster the lineup where needed.  That might be a starter who makes $10M, but doesn't have a fastball that tops out at 84 MPH.

2009 is a holding pattern...I expect a huge leap in 2010 and 2011.  Just like in a business model, you have to be patient and wait for the return on investment sometimes.

This is exactly why I despise the New York Yankees.

If only it were that simple...at least, for me, and probably a lot of others, we were "signed up" at birth.

Being a Pirate fan is like smoking- you know its bad for you, but you do it anyway.  Some of us got hooked in our youth, before we knew how miserable it would make us in the long run.

Being a Bucco fan is sort of like playing the slots.......you keep playing even though you're losing because you keep hoping you'll hit the big one!!!!

Or, being a Bucco fan is like being in an abusive relationship......you hang in even though you're abused because you keep hoping he/she will change!!!
