I definitely like that lefty Santos.  With the talent he has hopefully he can get adjusted to American life and become a Pirates within 5 years.

Rafael Quintero has very good stats as well, similar to Santos overall, more hits allowed but better control. He's at the same level but is a year younger.

The 3rd guy,Gerardo Esparza, doesnt have the K ratio of the other 2 or the control but they must've seen something they liked. They basically added 3 young arms very cheap($36k if the price is still 12k per minor league pick) Veal is obviously the only one we will see anytime soon though

K rates are way lower in the VSL than the DSL.  No idea why.  League-adjusted, Esparza's K rate was probably pretty similar to the others.  (I'm too lazy to do the math.)

With a stat analyst examining all these guys, I guess it's no surprise the K and BB numbers are very good.

Thanks for pointing that out. I checked and he was 5th in the league in K's and also 5th in IP's as well so its not too bad although 2 guys ahead of him in overall K's have a much better K rate. I noticed that he had a very high amount of unearned runs allowed, hopefully its because of very bad fielding and not an Oliver Perez breakdown on the mound where one bad play with 2 outs always opens a floodgate

Of course by making the one guy look better it makes the other two look a little worse because their K rate doesnt stand out as much compared to the rest of the leagues pitchers. An average of a K per IP isnt that rare apparently in the DSL

Dejan, btw, is saying Bautista will "probably" be non-tendered tomorrow, which is OK by me.  Sounds like they're just dotting the i's crossing the t's with Vazquez and they're bound to need more roster spots this winter, so they might as well do it now before they're locked into some costs with Bautista.

I would guess it's because of the fielding at that level, a lot of those kids are very raw. Add to that the fact that they're probably playing on some fields that don't have the best maintenance in the world and it's not surprising to see unearned runs start to pile up.
