I noticed this photo of Starling Marte on the MLB.com Top 100 Prospects List (#40):

And there are a lot of photos in which he looks weirdly old:

Not trolling--just something I noticed.

Klaw talked about this last podcast in regards to Carmona.

There is so much incentive to lie about your age in the DR and South and Central America.  He said that 16 year-olds will sign for $200k while 18 year-olds with the same talent will sign for $5k.   He also added that now teams are realizing a market inefficiency with how cheap the 18 year-old prospects have become that the teams are taking the same $200k and getting 40 18 year-olds instead of one 16 year old.

So from the team's perspective that's a $200k mistake. Ouch.

How is age fraud typically uncovered? I'm assuming the visa process.

There's been a few cases where it was never uncovered.  And only known, bacause the players themselves eventually 'fessed up.

Any notables that have confessed?

Didn't Manny Sanguillen admit to lying about his age?

I am certain that I read an interview in which he admitted that he was actually 4 years older than his listed age.  I cannot remember now where or when I read this.

The Pirates are really concerned about his age.  It could really affect a McCutchen deal.

They are?  Haven't seen anywhere that they are!  Will wait until someone that is credible makes an announcement about Marte's age.

Marte was signed late to begin with, so it would seem less likely that he would be lying about his age.  And if the team was that worried about it, they would have traded him last year.

I'm not sure what the concern is from the photos--he doesn't look any older than Tabata does to me.

Same info from the guy I talked to this weekend.  McCutchen won't be moved unless Marte is ready.  Being five years older will hurt Marte.  Again, you can take that info for what you want.  I don't know how true it is, what I heard second hand.
