I think our system gets undervalued for three reasons.
1. Sanchez went from being a top 50-100 guy to off the radar. I think his down year was solely because of the injury & weight loss. I bet he regains his status this year.
2. With the empahsis on fastballs at the lower levels a lot of our guys have very misleading numbers. I have a feeling that will correct itself with time. If Cain & ZVR make a big splash this year our system gets a considerable boost.
3. Allie went from census top 100 to not even a top 10 prospect in the organization by most counts. However, I think that's ridiculous. All the people that rated him so highly did so saying he was as raw as they come but had a huge ceiling. So to me his season was as expected.

I wonder about this. Are the Bucs the only team that takes this approach to pitchers? Unless Sanchez hits a lot better he is not going to make top 100. What I worry about is if the Pirates want to build through the farm system (which is the smart way to go) whether it can be enough better than everyone elses to make the team competive. NH is going to have to be a much better trader in order to make a good farm system pan out. Plus it is hard to have a top farm system year after year.

In addition, since Cole and Bell have yet to play, and with Heredia and Taillon only having limited exposure, there's not enough out of the "premier" prospects to justify a higher ranking.

Given that so much of that top ten ranking is tied to players with little to no pro experience, I'm actually surprised it is as high as it is. I suppose the author values projection higher than many. I'm fine with that though. It's been a while since our system could be over-ranked due to so many of our top players having such a high ceiling. That's a nice problem to have. But it is time for all of those over slot high school arms from the past several drafts to start to prove themselves as legitimate prospects. The philosophy of NH in the drafts has been mostly good to great (save for Sanchez), but if an arm or two or three don't start to produce from the myriad of C+ prospects, the execution will start to take a serious hit. And that starts this year.

Our top 5 is as good as any organization's.
Also, none of our top prospects should graduate this year (possible September call-up for Marte). That means any additions in 2012 via the draft, LA market and trades (Hanrahan?) would only boost the system even higher. That in addition to more breakouts from our younger players.

Sickles comes in with a #12 ranking for the Bucs. The Pirates don't look to lose any of their top prospects to enough Major League service time to remove them from prospect lists.
Teams ahead of the Pirates will lose Toronto: None San Diego: #1 Yonder Alonso Texas: #3 Leonys Martin Seattle: #1 Jesus Montero St Louis: #6 Lance Lynn Kansas City: Maybe a top 10 pitcher or 2 Tampa Bay: #1 Matt Moore Atlanta: #1-3 Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado Arizona: Maybe #1 or #2 Bauer or Skaggs Oakland: #1 Jarrod Parker and #4 Brad Peacock Boston: Maybe #4 Lavarney
Based on the other teams promoting prospects, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pirates break into that top 5 next year at this time.

BA has the Pirates' system ranked as #13. Not all that impressive considering where they have drafted over the past four seasons.

The 2009 draft looks to be pulling the Bucs down. Right now that draft is a bit of a dud, although there is lots of time for a few of the young arms to mature. The position players from 2010 aren't doing much either.

Concur. If Sanchez is a B+ prospect right now instead of a C. And one of ZVR, Cain or Dodson is a B prospect we're probably 5-7 in Sickels grading. Luckily all four have time to turn it around and be decent major leaguers. BTW - I think ZVR is a sleeper this year...

You could have said that every year since what, 2001?

And the Pirates had a comp pick for not signing Scheppers the previous yeat (Victor Black) who isn't doing anything.
