Does anyone think that rather than pay Jones $2.4M for 2012 they might sign him to a couple year extension at like $1.5-2M a season?   Or something like 3 years $7.5 with a couple clubs options and a buyout?

They guy is a very valuable bench player, crushes RHP...especially at PNC (which I'd love to find a number for) and plays a decent RF with a strong arm.

He's not worth $5M a year.  He's definitely worth $1M a year.   It's just where in the middle do you meet.

(I realize he's a Super Two, which also complicates things)

I could live with that type of extension provided the two option years cover 2013 and 2014  and the buyout is not big time $s.  That way if he stinks up the place or the FO finds some money to spend on a 1B thumper, or Marte shows even more promise then we can cut our ties with him after 2012.
