This seems to be a pretty cheap deal.  Surprised the Pirates didn't top this (maybe they did and he likes Baltimore better).  But it is probably a good risk for O's.

Just to be snarky, perhaps the Pirates wanted him with a NRI.

Report I found is from Major League Rumors.

The Orioles reached an agreement with lefty Wei-Yin Chen on a three-year deal worth less than $12MM, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.  Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first tweeted that the Orioles were close to a multiyear deal with Chen.

Honestly, I hadn't seen anything new linking the Pirates to chen since they signed Bedard. After that, the line "and the Pirates are also said to have had interest" appeared in every mlbtr post about him. That's it. My guess is that the Pirates kicked the tires on this one, didn't like what they saw and decided not to buy. 3 years 12 million makes me think Chen had nothing else on the table.

I was wondering about the Bucs only kicking the tires too.  It could be that Dejan is right and the Bucs roster is pretty much set other than the Non-Roster Invite type players.

Maybe that is why Pirate Fest was held earlier, all big moves already made.

P2 reported several days ago that we were also kicking the tires on Vincente Padilla. Peripherals so far look OK as he is coming back from injury. I've been surprised there has been no discussion here on Padilla as a SP option....

When the "big moves" constitute an aging mediocre shortstop, an aging mediocre catcher and a pitcher whose arm could fall off at any time, it doesn't fill me with a lot of hope that the Pirates 2012 record will be any better than the one from 2011. Hope springs eternal that the Pirates end up with a larger, more meaningful upgrade before spring training starts. But as the previously available players end up elsewhere day by day, the likelihood gets better and better (worse and worse?) that what is see is what we are going to get.

I should have put big moves in "".

Best thing about Padilla is that he likes to hit batters.  His career ERA+ is 100, I'm not sure if he should risk that by continuing his career.

It's Monday, so my sarcasm meter hasn't quite kicked in yet.

Padilla is aging, cheap, coming off major injuries both of the last two years, and has little hope of accomplishing anything as a major league pitcher going forward. I'm pretty sure he'll be given his Pirate uniform any day now.

I think we should make all the same threads about the same exact thing.

"Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review tweets that the Pirates will NOT scout free agent right-hander Vicente Padilla next week.
This shoots down a Spanish-language report from over the weekend. The 34-year-old Padilla underwent season-ending surgery in June to repair a bulging disk in his neck, but is reportedly reaching the mid-90s with his fastball this winter in Nicaragua. He'll likely have to settle for a spring training invite somewhere." --Rotoworld

If Padilla is open to a NRI, I would be fine with bringing him in and seeing what he has.
