So much for us jumping in, and grabbing Rizzo (young 1B prospect) looks like the Cubbies got him.

The Cubs have acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo and right-hander Zach Cates from the Padres for right-hander Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na, the teams announced. The move provides the Cubs with a potential long-term first baseman and clears up first base in San Diego.

Cubs acquired 1B Anthony Rizzo and RHP Zach Cates from the Padres in exchange for RHP Andrew Cashner and OF Kyung-Min Na.
The Cubs were viewed as a logical landing spot for Rizzo ever since the deal that landed Yonder Alonso in San Diego, as the Northsiders need a first baseman of the future and president of baseball operations Theo Epstein drafted him when he was with the Red Sox. Leaving Petco for Wrigley Field is great news for Rizzo's fantasy prospects, as Wrigley is favorable for left-handed batters and he should get a chance to start right away.

Does not seem like they gave up much either.  Kyung-Min Na does not really seem like much of a prospect, and I would think we could match Cashner.

You would think Lincoln would of matched Cashner maybe even overkill.......Our farm system is not the greatest we all know, but where we have depth is @ pitching. Lets move it.  Head Shake

My impression is that Cashner has a lot better arm than Lincoln. will need to read some of Cubby fan comments to see what they think of  him.

You have to like what Epstein is doing in a short period of time-

-Picked up Ian Stewart for basically nothing-  Potential long term 3b with good defense and power

-Got rid of the cancerous Zambrano and get a useful long term piece in Volstad

-Get Rizzo for an 8th inning setup guy

-Get rid of free agent to be Marshall for 5 years of upside starter Travis Wood.

It might explode, but Theo is putting his fingerprints on this franchise quickly.

Maybe, but Cashner has arm problems, and might be a reliever now.  Justin Wilson might have been a guy to send as well.  Seems like the Cubs got the better of the lower level players as well.

Weird deal.  I kind of assumed Rizzo might not be an option just because I figured he'd be used as part of a bigger deal for a major league player.  The Padres are kind of prospect-heavy right now.  Despite some MLB experience, Cashner is still in the unproven prospect stage.  He spent the better part of a year in the bullpen, made the starting rotation out of spring last season, but went down with an injury right away.  He only had one healthy month in 2011 and you can't really say much about him either way yet.  I guess Kyung-Min Na had good enough tools to get $725k out of high school as in international free agent, but results aren't even close to there yet.  Cates, the other player the Padres threw in, got a bigger bonus as an above slot 3rd rounder in 2010.  I just don't see what the thinking was here.  Almost feels like a favor to his buddies from Josh Byrnes.

Absolute steal for the Cubs. NH has to be kicking himself for not topping this offer.

Yeah, very disappointing. If we came out of the offseason without a clear, preferably long-term upgrade at first base, I was really hoping it would be on account of a realistic option simply not being available. Seeing what the Cubs gave up for Rizzo, though, has to be really discouraging from where we sit.

Does this mean that our roster really is pretty much set? NH can't be trying very hard to upgrade first base if he was not willing to go a shade better than this to acquire someone like Rizzo. Quite a letdown but absolutely not shocking.

Nah. He got the guys he was targeting nice and early. Barmes and Barajas are infinitely more valuable than a 22 year old who is the #1 Padres prospect. NH is obviously taking a long and well deserved vacation while the Cubs make dumb moves like this.

Perhaps this is part of the Cubs plan to not improve in 2012, if the Cubs, Brewers, Astros, Cardinals and Reds don't improve the Bucs can contend just by treading water.

I could see the Cubs flipping Rizzo for Moskos (just kidding).

I will start being disappointed when Rizzo proves he can hit a major league fastball.
