More changeups?

Post by SammyKhalifa »

I caught the post-game interview with Wil Crowe where he was talking about pitching about 30% changeups and how he thought it was making him a better pitcher. Then this evening I happened across this about Quintana:

Quintana also showed a notable change in his pitch usage against the Cubs. He noted after the game that he threw a lot of off-speed stuff, but just saying that would be an understatement.

Last season, Quintana threw his changeup 14.6% of the time, the highest mark of his career. On Tuesday, it was his most-used pitch. Quintana threw it 27 times in 71 pitches, outpacing even his fastball, which he threw 25 times. Each of his three strikeouts came on changeups, and he only allowed one hit with the off-speed pitch.

Is this a marked change in Pirate pitching philosophy, or just a coincidence that I noticed both of these on the same day?
