I brought up 3B. You brought up Freese.

The 3B position should be better overall. The depth and players expected to play that position are better than the guys who played that position last year.

Of course I brought up Freese he did start 114 games at 3rd base last year???? And of course you once again tried to twist it around to meet your agenda as you always do.

Do you find it odd that 3B was the only position where a starter from last year is still on the team and a replacement was brought in?

If 3B wasn't an issue, why would the Pirates replace their starter at that position?

Freese wore down and played poorly when he played too much.  He is not a starter.   He'll be a solid bench bat and part timer for us.

I never said I didn't want an upgrade, but you said the position was a huge hole last year, I pointed out that it wasn't nearly as bad as you made it out to be. I would suggest RF was a much bigger problem than 3rd base. I would agree that Freese wore down over the course of the season.

2017 David Freese:

503 PA:   .263 Avg, .368 OBP, .371 Slug  10 HR  + Defense 1.8 WAR, 100 w/RC+

2018 Moran:

240 PA:  .269, .350 OBP, .423 Slug, 7hr, minus minus defense  0.6 WAR:  111 w/RC+

The offensive production from 3b is better.  Defensively we're substantially worse.   If you don't put much stock into defense, we're better off at 3b.  If you do, we've essentially washed with last year, so far.

One thing is for sure, if it was a HUGE hole last year, even if you throw defense out the window completely, it remains a hole.  Particularly since the above numbers are buoyed by the fact that Moran isn't having to face lefties regularly, which would soften the 2018 offensive numbers further.

-------------------------
Also the above is just comparing Freese to Moran.  JHay contributed significantly at 3b production in 2017 but since Freese played 110 or so games and Moran is facing RHP only, I figured it's a reasonably close comparison.

In summary, cross your fingers and hope someone breaks out at 1b or 3b.  That's about where we are for the future of this infield.

Or, my hope.  KANG

Moran is also a rookie that has plenty of room for improvement.

I think Freese showed an inability to manage a full time role last year, and he's been disappointing in limited appearances this year. So basically, he's worthless.

Sean Rod too, I think the bench being bad as opposed to an asset is another large contributing factor in this year's struggle. (Frazier, Freese and SeanRod)

So do you feel that so far this year, the position has improved, or that mostly the future POTENTIAL for the position has improved from last year?

You'll get no qualms from me regarding Freese or SRod or Frazier.   Although if they're being played often enough to make a big difference, that's a big signal the starters aren't good enough, isn't it?

At 397 Runs in 92 games, we've now reached 11th in the NL in Runs per game. We're back in the bottom 5 after being in the top through April and May.

We should be able to hold our ground from slipping any further, however, as the #12 (SFG) is 10 runs less in 3 more games played.

At 88 HR, we are 13 of 15.  #15 Miami has 10 fewer in 3 more games.  doubt we will catch them

I predicted earlier in the season that only Miami would finish below us in hr's. I feel even more confident in that now. Given the fact that our 1b has lost all semblance of the power he displayed as a rookie.
