Clay Holmes, who was practically perfect for the first three months of the season, had an ERA of 7.00 in July, 6.75 in August, and currently 4.50 in September, taking the loss last night giving up a walk off single to the Brewers.

FWIW, not rooting against him. Just noticed he's become more of the guy we knew here with his inconsistency between being flat out dominant and confusingly unreliable.

Rats!  I thought he had potential.  The Rays will turn him into a solid role player.

For his sake, I hope they do

Was watching MLB network when they passed the news on High Heat. Next segment on MLB now, they did a quickly assembled tribute and discussed how great and unique of a player he was.  How he isn't in the HOF is a mystery.

I always liked him and was surprised when he left in expansion draft. Losing Wills, Clendendon and Mota in expansion draft just shows how deep the Pirate system was at the time.  Of course coverage of prospects didn't exist much then so I had no idea the Bucs were just going to reload.

Wills was on the 2015:Veterans Committee ballot. 16 voters, twelve votes needed to induct. Allen, Oliva, Kaat, Wills (9), and Minoso all got 8 to 11 votes. Because they keep tweaking the Veterans Committee process, most of these guys didn't appear on another ballot until last year, when Minoso, Kaat, and Oliva were inducted. Wills' vote total did plummet last year, but there's a pretty good chance that if the Vets had voted for, say, 2018 and 2021, that Allen and Wills would have been inducted before they died.

Wills came to the Pirates by a fluke - the Dodgers toured Japan after the 1966 season and Wills left the tour early. Dodger ownership sent down word that he wasn't to return in 1967, and the Pirates coughed up Bob Bailey and Gene Michael for him.

Very good- that is correct!

Wills was 34 and past his prime when he joined the Pirates in 1967. But he did hit .302 that year. But as a corner infielder, he provided no power. In fact, Wills was primarily a singles hitter. For someone with speed, he hit very few doubles over his career. 19 was his career high. Also in that season, he was just 29 of 39 on SBs. But in 1968 he had his 4th best year for SBs with 52 (but was caught 21 times). With expansion in 1969, the Bucs got younger, and Wills was one of several veterans not protected while players like Oliver, Hebner and Robertson came up from AAA.

Jordan Lyles pitched a CG 3-hitter with no walks tonight for the Orioles. Thanks to a DP he faced only 2 batters over the minimum.

Tyler Glasnow pitched Wednesday night, 3IP 1ER. Saw the hilights tonight, he was pretty nasty.

Tampa Bay getting him back for the post season. That's just sensational

Bligh Madris returns to his hometown of Las Vegas to play in the AAA Championship Series this weekend.

I guess a regional bias has had me following Bligh since we drafted him. While not a big prospect, I've always felt that he showed a nice ability to make adjustments as he went up each level. I was really sorry we let him go, and I'm still trying to figure out why - especially since we released Allen who I thought should have gone before Madris, and tell me why Collins? That question will probably get answered when the Rule 5 stuff happens though.

But ... I have a feeling Tampa will like Madris as he is a solid player and I think will make the adjustments necessary to help their MLB team next year. Just some numbers since he found a new team.

Durham AAA games 10; HRs 4; RBIs 15; BA .317; OPS 1.053

Madris may turn out to be just another one of the many players who drifted through Pittsburgh this season.  That said, I was encouraged when the Bucs began to give him some reps at first.    I would much rather continued to give him at bats there than JVM or now Collins.  Even though he is no longer a Pirate, I hope he succeeds with the Rays.

Charlie Morton has signed a contact for 2023 for $20 million dollars. There is also a $20 million option for 2024.
